Windows Media Player does not correctly display non-standard (and even many standard) video aspect ratios. I recommend the VLC player http://www.videolan.org/ It is free and much more capable than WMP.

Thanks for the link to VideoLAN, I'll check it out.

Interestingly, the ULead DWS2 DVD authoring software displays these mpgs at correct dimensions--at least in the authoring environment. I'm not sure if this will carry through to the finished DVD or how the quality of the images may be impacted--but I can report back to the forum after I finish the production if anyone is interested.
